Scrap metal

Special rules apply

Metal is accepted at both county sites. The Transfer Station lists bulky metal items, and the Hatch Pit takes metal of all kinds except items containing refrigerant, which it sends to the Transfer Station.

City cost & eligibility
The Hatch Pit charges metal loads by vehicle and sorted status, starting at 10 dollars for a sorted pickup or small trailer under eight feet and 50 dollars unsorted, and the Transfer Station prints its per load fees only under a heading for in-county commercial waste. Confirm which site and price fits the load on 208-528-5550.
When & how
The Transfer Station at 2455 Hemmert Ave is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the Hatch Pit at 3690 N Recycle Rd keeps the seasonal hours above. Sort metal from wood, cardboard and inert material to qualify for the lower sorted fee.
Get it ready
Keep refrigerant appliances out of a scrap metal load at the Hatch Pit, because those go to the Transfer Station, and separate metal from the rest of the load so the sorted fee applies. The city will not take scrap metal from the kerb, because it is not part of the container programme.

The city leaves large items and renovation debris to the county

The city has no duty to remove dirt, earth or debris from construction, renovation or demolition, appliances and white goods, large or heavy machines, tree trunks, hazardous waste and waste oils, dead animals, or any waste that is not inside a city-provided container. Those loads go to the Bonneville County Transfer Station at 2455 Hemmert Ave or the Hatch Pit on N Recycle Rd, and the city code also bars private businesses from hauling or disposing of waste for profit inside the city, apart from licensed recycling businesses.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self hauling in Idaho Falls runs to Bonneville County. The Transfer Station at 2455 Hemmert Ave on 208-528-5550 is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and takes household garbage, furniture, mattresses, carpet, bulky metal items and appliances, with published per item fees for refrigerant units and a published per size tire schedule, plus grass clippings and leaves, solidified latex paint and lead acid batteries. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Scrap metal removal, from your photo request to the pickup plan in Idaho Falls.

How do I request a scrap metal pickup quote?

Text photos to (844) 879-0892 with your ZIP code, approximate amount and access details. Show the whole pile and a closer view of the material. Our team will confirm the scope, quote and scheduling.

Do you buy scrap metal or pick it up for free?

This is a request for a paid removal quote, not a scrap-buying or free-collection offer. If you want to sell metal, ask a local recycler about its accepted materials and delivery requirements.

How much does scrap metal removal cost?

This service uses a custom quote. Send photos, the approximate amount, your ZIP code and access details. Our team confirms the scope and price before booking; there is no fixed-price catalog item for this pile.

Can you collect it today?

Tell our team your preferred day when you request the quote. Timing depends on the material, amount and access, and is confirmed with your quote. Sending photos does not reserve same-day pickup.

Where does scrap metal go in Idaho Falls?

To one of the two Bonneville County facilities. The Transfer Station at 2455 Hemmert Ave accepts bulky metal items, and the Hatch Pit on N Recycle Rd accepts metal of every kind except items containing refrigerant, which are sent to the Transfer Station. Sorting metal from wood, cardboard and inert material earns the lower sorted rate at the Hatch Pit, which is charged by vehicle size rather than by weight.Official guidance

What does the city still recycle?

Only glass. Since January 16, 2024 the city has been unable to accept recycling other than glass, and it keeps collection bins around the city with an interactive map. Curbside recycling is a separate paid service from Western Recycling covering mixed paper, number 1 and number 2 plastic bottles and tin and aluminum cans, and E Cyclers of Idaho offers free electronics recycling in Idaho Falls.Official guidance
