Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions, monitors, computers and printers

Accepted with preparation

Televisions, computers and printers leave two ways: the city picks them up by appointment from its own trash customers, and the county household hazardous waste and electronics site takes them free from any county resident.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free to New Hanover County residents at the county household hazardous waste and electronics facility, with identification required and out-of-county material refused. A city trash customer can also book the appointment pickup, which is included in the monthly Solid Waste Services rate.
When & how
Call 910.341.7875 for the city pickup, use the mobile HazWagon on its scheduled days, or bring the device to 3002 Highway 421 North on a weekday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. or Saturday between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from anything that still powers on, keep the screen and the computer whole because stripped televisions and computers are refused, and call ahead when the load holds ten or more large devices. Electronics may not go in the trash or the recycling cart, because North Carolina bans them from landfills.

Separate piles, one appointment

Everything scheduled has to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and material may be set out after noon the day before. The bulky items, the metal items, the electronics and the yard waste go in separate piles on the right-of-way because three different trucks service them, so list every item when the appointment is booked and bend or remove nails from lumber before it goes out.

City of Wilmington Solid Waste Services with New Hanover County Environmental Management

Book the city bulky appointment pickup

A city trash customer with a couch, mattress, appliance, television or other oversized household item that will not fit in the cart.

Cost & conditions
No charge. City of Wilmington trash customers with curbside service on a public street, booked in advance. The city describes the bulky pickup as carrying no additional charge and includes it in the monthly Solid Waste Services rate, while a household without city trash service is not eligible.
Arrange it
Call the Solid Waste Services office on 910.341.7875 or complete the online appointment form no later than 4:30 p.m. on the business day before the trash day, list every item, then set the piles out on the right-of-way on the collection day.

The pickup is by appointment only and covers normal household items, not a whole property cleanout. Trash that did not fit in the cart is not a bulky item, nothing too large or heavy for the crew is taken, demolition material from contracted work is the contractor's responsibility, and the piles have to be separated by type.

Take chemicals and electronics to the county site

A county household with paint, batteries, bulbs, fuels, pesticides, sharps, a television or any small device that runs on a cord or a battery.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free to New Hanover County households bringing their own material, with identification ready. The county cannot accept hazardous chemicals from businesses or from out-of-county residents, and small camping propane tanks, prescription medicine, medical waste, ammunition and asbestos are refused.
Arrange it
Drive to 3002 Highway 421 North on a weekday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. or Saturday between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m., or use the mobile HazWagon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Monday, Wednesday, Friday and first Saturday stops.

The mobile unit cannot pour out liquid waste and hand a container back, and it caps a visit at ten gallons of liquid and two televisions, so a larger load belongs at the permanent facility. Households with ten or more large electronic devices are asked to call ahead, and stripped televisions and computers are refused.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self-hauling in Wilmington means one gate for almost everything: the New Hanover County Landfill at 5210 Highway 421 North, open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to noon. It takes municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris and bulky items such as mattresses and furniture, billing by net weight at $61.00 per ton with a $5.00 minimum and adding a flat $10.00 for each mattress or box spring. Appliances, household recyclables, motor oil, antifreeze and up to five tires a day from a resident arrive at no charge in their own recovery areas, while clean concrete, clean dirt, untreated lumber and pallets go to separate areas at lower rates. Household chemicals and electronics go instead to the county site at 3002 Highway 421 North, free to county households with identification, and the mobile HazWagon brings the same service to a park or town hall several days a week. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Wilmington.

How much does TV removal cost in Wilmington?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Wilmington?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

Where do televisions and computers go in Wilmington?

The city picks up televisions, computers and printers by appointment on 910.341.7875 from its own trash customers, and any county resident can bring the same items to the household hazardous waste and electronics facility at 3002 Highway 421 North at no charge. Stripped televisions and computers are refused there, so the device has to arrive complete.Official guidance

What do I do with a television at the county site?

Bring it whole and expect the same rules as the rest of the electronics load: the county asks for identification, refuses material from businesses and out-of-county residents, and limits the mobile HazWagon to two televisions per visit. Households with ten or more large devices are asked to call ahead for an appointment.Official guidance

Who can use the county landfill and the county collection site?

Both county sites are built for New Hanover County households. The landfill takes loads from residents and businesses at the scale, while the household hazardous waste and electronics site is free to county households with identification and cannot take chemicals from businesses or from out-of-county residents. Loads arriving at the landfill from outside the county carry an extra charge and can be screened.Official guidance
