The county takes anything that runs on a cord or a battery, from laptops and phones to holiday lights and smoke detectors, at its household hazardous waste and electronics site, and household batteries also go into collection points at the county libraries and partner sites.

Get it ready
Keep the load sorted, and remember that the mobile unit is the tighter route: it caps a visit at ten gallons of liquid waste and two televisions, while the main facility can empty a fuel container and hand it straight back. Household batteries are also collected in the county's battery drop points, including the library sites.

No charge. Free to New Hanover County households bringing their own material, with identification ready. The county cannot accept hazardous chemicals from businesses or from out-of-county residents, and small camping propane tanks, prescription medicine, medical waste, ammunition and asbestos are refused.
Arrange it
Drive to 3002 Highway 421 North on a weekday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. or Saturday between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m., or use the mobile HazWagon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Monday, Wednesday, Friday and first Saturday stops.
The mobile unit cannot pour out liquid waste and hand a container back, and it caps a visit at ten gallons of liquid and two televisions, so a larger load belongs at the permanent facility. Households with ten or more large electronic devices are asked to call ahead, and stripped televisions and computers are refused.

Household chemicals and electronics: acids, aerosols, antifreeze, ballasts, household batteries of every type except electric-vehicle lithium batteries, caustics, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes, cell phones with chargers and earbuds, compact fluorescent bulbs and tubes from residential properties, cooking oil, electronics with a cord or a battery, holiday lights, fertilizers, road flares, food waste, fuels and gel fuels, small disposable helium tanks, herbicides and fungicides, household cleaners, mercury thermostats and thermometers, motor oil and oil filters, latex and oil-based paint, pesticides, twenty-pound propane tanks, sharps, smoke detectors, solvents, and stains, varnishes and sealers.
New Hanover County households only, with identification required, and no material from businesses or from out-of-county residents because of permit restrictions. Large appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers and air conditioning units are refused here and go to the landfill at no charge, stripped televisions and computers are refused, and asbestos-containing material, explosives and ammunition, prescription medications, small camp-stove propane tanks and regulated medical waste are not accepted. Can you pick up old electronics today in Wilmington?+

Do you erase data from old computers?+
Data erasure and certified data destruction are not included in Dropcurb removal. Back up the information you need, then follow the manufacturer’s sign-out and reset instructions before pickup. If a device cannot be erased or contains sensitive business information, arrange suitable data handling before giving it away. Yes. Box of electronics is an existing option for small devices, cables and chargers together in one box. A monitor, desktop computer and printer each have their own item option. Send a photo before booking for a large or heavy box, unusual contents or separate batteries so we can confirm the fit.
What counts as electronics at the county site?+
The county answers broadly: if it has an electrical cord or runs off batteries, they will take it. That covers computers, monitors, cell phones with their chargers and earbuds, cords, holiday lights, CDs and DVDs, smoke detectors and rechargeable batteries, while large appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers and air conditioners are excluded and go to the landfill at no charge.Official guidance
Who can use the county landfill and the county collection site?+
Both county sites are built for New Hanover County households. The landfill takes loads from residents and businesses at the scale, while the household hazardous waste and electronics site is free to county households with identification and cannot take chemicals from businesses or from out-of-county residents.
