Get it ready
Bring your own bags and tape, because an accepted mattress has to be bagged and sealed at the site, and keep the piece dry and whole. An adjustable, air, crib or futon mattress is treated as its own item type by the state program, so ask at the gate if the set is unusual.
The Material Recycling Facility at 943 River Street is free for all Woonsocket residents for the items the city list assigns to it, including electronics, mattresses and box springs, scrap metal, white goods, batteries, propane tanks, bulky rigid plastic, textiles, books and media, cardboard, extra recycling, antifreeze, plastic film and shredded paper. Hours are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., excluding holidays, proof of residency and identification are required for electronics and mattresses, and the Swap Shed takes small dishes, small appliances, toys, tools, fixtures and nick-knacks for reuse.
Every mattress and box spring brought to the Material Recycling Facility is inspected on site by the attendant, and an approved piece has to be bagged and sealed by the resident using their own bags and tape. A mattress that is rejected has to be disposed of at the owner's cost elsewhere, either at the state facility or through a private hauler, so check the condition before loading the car.

The facility only takes the item categories the city assigns to it, so a sofa, wooden desk, porcelain sink, toilet, window, wooden swing set, piano, pool table or cut oil tank has to use the sticker route or another outlet. A mattress has to pass an on-site inspection and be bagged and sealed by the resident.

Tires at the tire gate, mattresses and box springs for recycling, white goods with and without CFC coolant, and scrap metal, with the residential recycling area taking special and bulky item drop-offs.
Acceptance criteria and fees apply, the mattress program takes up to three units a day without charge and charges above that, a white good that still holds CFC coolant carries a per unit fee, and a load has to meet the materials acceptance criteria posted by the authority. Fees may apply to other material and the scalehouse decides what a load is.

From $8 per car tire in the fee schedule effective July 1, 2026, alongside mattress recycling at no charge for up to three units per day and $70 each above that, white goods at no charge without CFC coolant and $12 each with it, and scrap metal at no charge. The statewide options open to any Rhode Island resident, with fees set by the authority and paid at the scalehouse. The tire gate is 3 Shun Pike and the Woonsocket sticker program does not apply here.
