A mattress is household material, so it rides a general waste load at the Sudbury Landfill rather than a cart. Bedding is not on the courtesy pass exclusion list, which names refrigerant appliances, medical waste, electronic devices, asbestos, compost or dirt sales and tires.
An appliance with a compressor has its own published rate at the Sudbury Landfill, and an appliance without one rides a general waste load. The courtesy pass does not cover appliances with refrigerant, so a refrigerator is paid for even in a household that has not used its free load yet.
Electronics have a published per item rate at the Sudbury Landfill, and the courtesy pass does not cover them, so a television or computer is a paid trip.
Building material goes to the Sudbury Landfill by weight. A load of only cement, asphalt, concrete, soil or rock has its own per ton rate, and mixed construction material rides the general waste rate.
Exercise equipment is named nowhere on the city's pages and carries no rate line of its own, so a treadmill or weight machine is a confirmation rather than a promised tip fee.
The handoff matters
The container goes to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day, three feet from cars, utility poles, other containers and any other obstacle, not under low hanging branches, utility lines or a basketball hoop, with the lid opening toward the street. Extra material on the ground beside the container is not collected, wedged items stop the container emptying, and an overfilled or too heavy container is charged an additional fee.
