That makes a couch, a mattress or a large appliance an ordinary collection-day item with no appointment, as long as the doors come off a refrigerator and the branches are bundled to the published size. Glass and sharp objects cannot go in plastic bags, an overloaded wheeled container is not collected, and the city does not take hazardous, flammable, infectious or explosive material. Electronics are different: New York State law bans putting them in the trash or in curb recycling, so a screen or a computer goes to a state electronic waste collection site such as the county ecopark on Avion Drive, while household chemicals wait for an ecopark appointment. Contractor-generated construction waste is not a city collection at all, but building refuse from a property owner's own repair work is.

Who collects refuse in Rochester and how do I reach them?+
The City of Rochester Department of Environmental Services collects residential refuse itself, once a week on the address collection day, with the fee billed on the annual tax bill. General questions and container requests go to 311, or (585) 428-5990 from outside the city limits, and an extra collection such as a move-out or a small improvement project is arranged with the Commercial Refuse Business Office at 428-6928.
